About Tim Grey
Born in 1962 in Wimbledon, London, Tim Grey is an artist living and working in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. His creative journey spans four decades, shaped by his dual talents as a graphic designer and fine artist.
Tim’s foundation in art, art history, and graphic design, including study at St Martin’s School of Art, London, has deeply influenced his work, often blurring the lines between design and fine art. In 2000, while working on a project for a US energy company, he produced a large abstract painting, Pipeline, which became the centrepiece of an Australian Government and natural gas industry event at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
Over time, Tim’s focus has shifted from large geometric abstracts in acrylic to a passion for realist landscapes and figurative compositions in oil. Inspired by artists such as Edward Hopper and Jeffrey Smart, his work balances technical precision, structural finesse, and an evocative use of light, shadow, and form.
Tim’s paintings capture the beauty in everyday, often overlooked moments. His 2022 work, Vacancy—depicting empty motel rooms and vacant parking bays during the COVID-19 pandemic—exemplifies his ability to transform the ordinary into the profound.
In 2020, Tim submitted his work to an art competition for the first time, becoming a Finalist and People’s Choice Award winner in the Lethbridge 20000 Small Scale Art Award. He has since continued to participate in select art prizes, most recently being a Finalist in the 2023 Lethbridge Landscape Prize.
Tim is currently working on a series of paintings that continue to explore atmosphere, composition, and the subtle narratives within everyday life.
He is also a Director at Brisbane branding agency LloydGrey.
